How International Universities Can Recruit Students From India

India is not one recruitment market. Treating it as one is why campaigns underperform, and the split runs along a line most institutions never draw.

The split that matters

The most useful thing an international recruiter can learn about India is that the southern states and the northern, western and eastern states behave like different countries commercially.

South India generates a heavily postgraduate flow, concentrated in computing, engineering and data science, with a distinct healthcare and nursing pipeline from Kerala and coastal Karnataka. The rest of the country skews far more undergraduate, with a pronounced Canada and Australia orientation through the Punjab and Chandigarh belt and a commercial emphasis across Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Surat.

One campaign for both means bringing postgraduate material to school leavers and undergraduate material to working engineers. Both audiences notice.

What postgraduate applicants actually ask

They are typically two to four years out of an undergraduate degree, employed, and funding the move themselves or through a loan. They have read your department page before booking the meeting.

Expect questions about specialisation options, named faculty, research groups, assistantship availability, industry links and graduate employment outcomes. A generalist recruiter struggles visibly here. A subject specialist, or an academic who can speak to the programme, performs far better.

What undergraduate applicants and parents ask

Entry requirements against CBSE, ICSE and state boards. Total annual cost. Accommodation and safety. Whether the student can work during and after the degree. What happens if grades fall short of the offer, and whether a foundation or pathway route exists.

Parents are usually present and frequently decisive. They may not have studied abroad themselves, so reassurance about support structures carries real weight.

Loan funding raises the standard of every answer

A large proportion of Indian study abroad is financed through education loans, often secured against family property. This is not an abstract financial arrangement; it is a family putting its house behind a decision.

The practical effect is that vagueness about money damages trust disproportionately. Accurate total-cost figures, realistic scholarship information and honest graduate employment data are more persuasive than any ranking claim. If your typical graduate salary does not service the loan comfortably, students will work that out, and they will respect you more for having said so.

The tier-two opportunity nobody is taking

In-person recruitment in India concentrates on a handful of metros. Meanwhile Coimbatore, Vizag, Hubli, Mysore, Lucknow, Jaipur, Indore and Surat produce substantial numbers of qualified applicants who have almost no direct contact with international institutions.

Response rates from these cities are frequently stronger than from the metros, precisely because nobody else is talking to them. Online delivery reaches them at no marginal cost, which changes the arithmetic entirely.

Destination is decided by what happens after graduation

Across both halves of the country, post-study work rights and visa duration weigh heavily in destination choice, often more than institutional ranking. Indian students and their families track policy changes in the UK, Canada and Australia closely and will know about a change before your marketing department has updated the page.

Be accurate and current on this. Getting it wrong, even optimistically, is remembered.

Structuring an Indian campaign

Run the two markets as two campaigns. For the southern week, bring subject specialists and postgraduate material, lead with funding and outcomes. For the northern week, bring recruiters comfortable with parents, undergraduate entry requirements and pathway options.

Confirm early. Students shortlist and book appointments before each week opens, so institutions confirmed late appear in fewer wishlists regardless of how good their offer is.

This article is general guidance for prospective students and institutions, not immigration, financial or legal advice. Entry rules, fees, scholarships and work rights change; check official government and university sources before acting.

Frequently asked questions

Which Indian cities produce the most international students?

Traditionally the metros of Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, but tier-two cities now produce substantial volume and receive far less recruitment attention.

Should we recruit at undergraduate or postgraduate level in India?

Both are viable, but they come from different parts of the country. Postgraduate demand is strongest in the south, undergraduate demand across the north, west and east.

How much do rankings matter to Indian students?

Less than post-study work rights and graduate employment outcomes for most applicants, though rankings still function as a filter for a shortlist.

Do we need to work with agents in India?

Many institutions do, and direct recruitment complements rather than replaces that. Direct student contact gives you a view of the market that agent reporting alone does not.

What is the most common mistake institutions make in India?

Running one campaign for the whole country, and being vague about money. Both are avoidable.

How early should we confirm participation?

Before students begin shortlisting for that edition. Early confirmation directly increases appointment bookings.
