Student recruitment in India

Twenty cities across two dedicated weeks, and a market that punishes generic campaigns. Why the southern and northern markets need separating, and how to structure each.

How can universities recruit students from India?

Universities can recruit Indian students through World Study Expo by joining the two dedicated India weeks of the online programme. South India (14–17 October 2027) covers ten cities and North, West and East India (21–24 October 2027) covers ten more. Students register free with a stated subject, study level and intended intake, then book one-to-one video appointments.

Two markets, not one country

South India generates a heavily postgraduate flow concentrated in computing, engineering and data science, plus a distinct healthcare and nursing pipeline from Kerala and coastal Karnataka. The northern, western and eastern markets skew far more undergraduate, with a strong Canada and Australia orientation through the Punjab and Chandigarh belt and a commercial emphasis in Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Surat.

Running one Indian campaign for both means bringing undergraduate material to a postgraduate audience and vice versa. Two weeks lets you bring the right material to each.

What postgraduate applicants ask

They are older, self-directed and have already read your department page. Expect questions about specialisation, supervisors, assistantships, funding and graduate employment outcomes. A generalist recruiter struggles here; a subject specialist does well.

What undergraduate applicants and their parents ask

Entry requirements against CBSE, ICSE and state boards. Total cost. Safety and accommodation. Whether the student can work during and after the degree. Foundation and pathway routes if grades fall short. Parents are usually present and usually decisive.

Loan funding raises the standard

A large share of Indian study abroad is financed through education loans, often secured against family property. That makes accurate total-cost figures and honest employment data more persuasive than any ranking claim, and vagueness about money actively damages trust.

The tier-two opportunity

In-person recruitment concentrates on a handful of metros. Twenty cities across two online weeks reaches a qualified applicant pool that institutions relying on travel simply cannot see.

Questions

India recruitment: your questions

Why does World Study Expo split India into two weeks?

Because the southern and northern markets differ in study level, subject mix and destination preference. Two weeks lets institutions bring postgraduate material to South India on 14–17 October and undergraduate material to the north on 21–24 October.

Can we join only one India week?

Yes. Many institutions select the week that matches their target study level, though most recruiting broadly take both.

Which Indian cities are covered?

South India (14–17 October 2027) covers Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Trivandrum, Coimbatore, Vizag, Hubli, Mangalore and Mysore. North, West and East India (21–24 October 2027) covers Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore and Surat.

Should we send a subject specialist or a recruiter?

For the South India week, a subject specialist is noticeably more effective because postgraduate applicants ask departmental questions. For North, West and East India, a recruiter comfortable talking to parents works well.

How important are scholarships in India?

Very, and specificity matters more than size. A clearly explained partial award that a student can actually obtain beats a vague reference to substantial funding.

Do Indian students expect to work after graduating?

Most factor post-study work rights heavily into destination choice, and they track policy changes closely. Be ready to state the current position for your country accurately.

Can we combine India with the Gulf?

Yes. Many institutions run the UAE exhibitions and the Gulf online week alongside both India weeks as a single regional campaign.
